Night Shift Health Effects

If you work during the night, or in the graveyard shift, as it is commonly known, there are certain health effects that you might have to deal with. Working in shifts can jeopardize your body and brain, both. Read on to find out the night shift health effects.

Night Shift Health Effects

It becomes quite impossible to have a sound sleep during the daytime. Not only because a human brain is programmed to rest and sleep during the night, but also because of the noise, which is perhaps the biggest disturbing factor. People who sleep during the day have to deal with noisy neighbors, children, traffic, etc.

The brain generally requires atleast 8 hours of sleep to feel nourished and rested. But because of the busy environment during the daytime, it is not always possible to sleep 8 hours everyday. As a result, your body will be tired and you will feel fatigued the whole time.

The sleep/wake cycle of the body is disturbed because of working in shifts. When you are awake during the night and asleep during the day, your body does not receive the proper, positive biological cues because of the amount of light that is present in the environment during the daytime. These signs are very important to regulate the circadian rhythms that control the sleep/wake cycle of the body and brain. Inturn, this will pose difficulty in sleeping.

Working in shifts can have an effect similar to jet lag. The body, on an average, needs one hour per day to adjust to the changes in the sleeping habit but working in shifts disrupts this. Hence the person who works in night shifts finds it quite impossible to sleep properly.

Working the whole night can also cause heart attacks. People who work during the night and sleep during the day are more susceptible to heart diseases and even heart attacks, mainly, because of their work pattern. This is because of lack of proper sleep, stressing your body during the night, chronic stress, etc.

Not only heart attack, an irregular heart beat is a good indicator of the condition of your heart and your body as well. Irregular heart beat can occur when you work during the night and try and sleep during the day. It is also a good indicator of how your body is taking this whole change in the sleep cycle. An irregular heart beat can cause several other diseases in the body as well.

Another very important problem that night shift workers face is they are not able to relax from the work environment, after their shift is over. This might not seem to be an important thing, but it sure is. People who work during the day time mostly have 3-4 hours before they go to bed. But night shift workers generally come home and get right into the bed with all the stress and tension of work with them. It is very important to relax and distance yourself from the stress of the work before you go to bed. One can listen to music, eat something healthy or watch some kind of TV show to relax.

----------

I am personally working two weeks routine night shift work since September 2007, it's one year and 3 months until to date. I feel the health effect of working night shift and rotating shift patterns, I started to have food supplements to "maintain" my health.

The main supplement is Milk Thistle which help detoxified my body and improves my liver functions.

I hope I could one day start not working night shift, and see the day lights, everyday, always...

Cheers.

----------

CAN

This is the True Story

A son says to his father: 'Dad, would you be willingly to run a marathon with me?'
The father, despite his age and a heart disease, says 'YES'.
And they run that marathon, together.

The son asks: 'Dad, can you run another marathon with me?' Again father says 'YES'.
They run another marathon, together.

One day the son asks his father: Dad, would please do the Iron Man with me?'

(Now just in case you wouldn't know, 'The Iron Man' is the toughest triathlon in existence; 4km swimming, then 180 km by bike, and finally another 42 km running, in one stroke).

Again his father says 'YES'

Maybe this doesn't 'touch' you yet by your heart strings... until you see this movie (put on sound!):

My Redeemer Lives...

Starting with me...

Dear all, I just want to share with those who read this page.

“Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country…” the quote was part of the inaugural address by former US President John F Kennedy on January 20, 1961.

Malaysia needs peoples who can contribute to the country, even just a thought of cleaniness before intend to throw a piece of tissu paper on road side. Don't ever think that everybody is doing the same, and why shouldn't I doing that?

Let us do our part.

Regards

Antara pendatang dan penumpang!

Syed Imran is an Arab-Malaysian born in Penang, Malaysia, ex-Bernama
journalist (1971-1998) and former press secretary to Minister in PM's
Department

Pinang bernama Ahmad bin Ismail. Sama ada benar atau tidak apa yang
didakwa dikatakan olehnya mengenai rakyat Malaysia keturunan Cina

Abdul Rahim meninggal dunia.

Mohamed Yakcop, orang Bugis seperti Najib, orang Minang seperti Rais

Malaysia Maju!

Spending too much time in office? Read this.

HAVE you ever wondered why we tend to be more polite with total strangers than we are with our own family?

Think back the last time you accidentally bumped into a passer-by. I wouldn’t be surprised if you had said something like, “I’m sorry, please excuse me.”
Now think back to the time when you accidentally collided into your child at home. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you had sternly retorted with “Can’t you see where you’re going?”

If you’re saying to yourself. “Yeah, it’s true”, you’re not alone.

When someone spoke to me about this recently, I had to sheepishly admit to him that I am one of those who are “guilty as charged”.

It would seem at first that these reactions are totally normal, but you need only look a sliver below the surface to realise that if we can be so polite to people we don’t even know, how much more we should be considerate and show courtesy to the people who are closest to us.

But why do we react the way we do? Is it familiarity that breeds contempt? Is it an ingrained unconscious habit to take things too much for granted at home? Or is it just something that’s intrinsic in our culture?

Think about this too: We pour ourselves into work so passionately that it often exceeds the enthusiasm and dedication which we are prepared to shower upon our families.

In the same breath, we readily acknowledge the fact that if we die tomorrow, the company we work for could easily replace us in a matter of days. But the family we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

In spite of this, many of us continue to partake in such “unwise investments” which invariably yield poor rates of return. I know of people in my office who spend so much time at work that they jest about knowing more about their fellow colleagues than their own spouse and kids. For me, this is no laughing matter.

Here’s a story I heard some years ago:

A professor stood before his philosophy class with some items in front of him.
When the class began, he picked up a very large and empty glass jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked
once more if the jar was full.

The students responded with a unanimous “yes”. The professor then produced two cans of beer from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor.
“I want you to recognise that this jar represents your life. The golf balls represent the important things – your family, your health, your children, your friends, your passions – the kind of stuff that if all else was lost and only these remained, your life would still be full.

“The pebbles are the other things that matter, like your job, your house, your car.
“The sand is everything else – the small stuff.
“If you put the sand into the jar first, there will be no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.”

You know, the same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small things, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
Pay attention to the elements that are critical to your happiness.

Play with your children. Set aside time for your medical check-ups.Help out at a charitable institution. Take your spouse out to dinner.

Don’t worry. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the hinge on that cupboard door.

Take care of the golf balls first; the rest is just sand.

Complementary packages from Hong Kong Tourism Board

I got a card from Poslaju under my house main door when I got home last night. Just wonder what that is...

Went to post office just now and guess what, letters are from Hong Kong Tourism Board.

In the envelope:

1) Letter from HKTB

2) Letter of complementary for 3 nights stay in HK Hotel listed by HKTB

3) Letter of complementary for 1 admission to Disneyland Hong Kong

4) Letter of complementary for 1 admission to Ocean Park including Lunch at restaurant.

5) Letter of complementary for 1 admission to Wetland Park Hong Kong

6) Letter of complementary for 1 pax of Hong Kong Island half day tour package

6) Letter of complementary meal voucher valued HK$500 for meal at Lan Kooi Fong restaurants

7) Letter of complementary for 1 pax round trip visit to Ugong Peng via cable car including HK$50 shopping voucher at the souvenir shop

All complementary vouchers are valid through 1 year until 30th of June 2009.
All complementary vouchers have no cash value and not transferable

The above set of complementary letters is for 1 person; my wife has another set of similar complementary letters. So to say we have doubled the package.

It is impressing that HKTB made such a complementary to recover incident of Tatami Hampton Hotel. The duty of HKTB is to take care of Hong Kong tourism industry, and yes, they are doing it very well.

My wife and I as victims in this incident, we were lost in the strange place when we were asked to leave the hotel at 10:30PM 17 June 2008. I explained to the reporter that I understand the situation where by the fault is not with HKTB nor HK government. All faults should be responsible by the Tatami Hampton Hotel itself.

Please look at my previous post for the incident descriptions.

Check related post: Tatami Hampton Hotel closed down on 18 June 2008

My wife and I are very happy to be treated well upon the incident; we would like to express our appreciation to the following parties:

Hong Kong government apologises to evicted tourists

Hong Kong's government has apologised to tourists who were kicked out of a hotel that was taken over by a city bank due to an unpaid loan.

Dozens of bewildered visitors from across Asia, Australia and Europe were ordered to leave the hotel after Bank of East Asia (BEA) took possession of the property on Wednesday.

"We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience and unhappiness caused to the tourists," Au King-chi, Hong Kong commissioner for tourism, told reporters.

"We should have set up a counter at the hotel two or three hours after the incident took place to provide information to tourists on the prices and availability of hotel rooms nearby and arrange for transfer."

The guests were evicted following a prolonged battle between BEA and Labour Buildings, the company that runs the hotel, over an unpaid 80 million Hong Kong dollar ($A10.79 million) loan.

Labour Buildings, a former investment arm of the Taiwan's Kuomintang political party, said it had been originally granted the loan to curry favour with the party 10 years ago, the South China Morning Post reported.

The company issued a statement condemning BEA, saying the bank's actions were harmful to the tourism industry of the south Chinese city.

"Under no circumstances can the Bank of East Asia and the bailiffs drive hotel guests away. The bank's right to possession does not mean it can cold-bloodedly drive away hotel guests," it said.

The hotel would offer refund to guests who had already paid for their bookings, the statement added.

A spokeswoman for Bank of East Asia told AFP it had no comment to make.

"How could something like this happen in Hong Kong?" said a woman from mainland China who identified herself as Li, according to the Post.

She only discovered the problem when she arrived in Hong Kong on Wednesday evening with her three teenage daughters and was told she could not stay in the Tatami Hampton Hotel, situated in the bustling Mongkok area of the city.

A notice posted in the hotel lobby said that it had been taken over by lawyers representing the bank and the bailiff pursuing a court order, the report said. TV images showed the doors to the hotel bolted closed.

Hong Kong, which styles itself as "Asia's World City", spends millions of dollars every year attracting tourists from the mainland and across the world.

However, it was hit by a string of tourism scandals last year, when visitors on cheap package deals, often from mainland China, were forced to visit certain stores and strongly encouraged to buy goods before being allowed to leave.

50 guests ejected as hotel closes

A three-star Mong Kok hotel suddenly shut its doors last night throwing 50 guests onto the street.

Bailiffs served a closure order on the 108-room Tatami-Hampton Hotel in Changsha Street after the owner lost a court battle with Bank of East Asia, which was granted HK$82 million in damages.

Police were called to keep order as angry guests were forced to leave.

Fifty visitors were affected but by last night only 37 could be contacted.

Most guests booked through the internet.

Many were from the mainland but there were others from Taiwan, Malaysia, Australia, Italy, Singapore and Argentina. One was from Hong Kong.

One mainland visitor, who checked in just hours before he was thrown out, said he was surprised when he could not get into his room when he returned in the evening.

He said he knew no one in Hong Kong and his first concern was to find a place to spend the night.

Two sisters from Shanghai paid HK$3,000 for three nights. One said it was irresponsible of management to accept guests when they were fighting a lawsuit.

The 18-story hotel is close to tourist attractions including Tung Choi Street, Garden Street and Temple Street.

Federation of Hong Kong Hotel Owners executive director Michael Li Hon-shing said the incident underlined deficiencies in hotel grading. A budget establishment with some decoration and very simple facilities inside can easily call itself a hotel it gives tourists a wrong impression that hotels in Hong Kong are like that, he said.

A legal definition of different hotel gradings is important in guaranteeing the type and quality of services and facilities.

He said the only check on hotels is the Hotel and Guesthouse Accommodation Ordinance, which only monitors fire prevention in hotels.

But he said the way the hotel closed down is unacceptable and will affect Hong Kongs image.

Tatami Hampton Hotel closed down on 18 June 2008

With great surprise that after the a day of travelling within Hong Kong Island, I saw there are so many people carrying camera at the front doors of Tatami Hampton Hotel, Mongkok, Hong Kong.

At the beginning we were so excited that there might have some superstars in the mist of filming, but when we got closer, we discovered that were wrong, they are reporters.

Doors that going up to the hotel rooms were locked and only a small door to the reception area were left opened. I got to know from one senior uncle that this hotel has been handed over to the court and all guest have to leave the hotel immediately.

I was like "What?, the hotel that I stayed last night close shop?" I had a feeling at that time that we are going to find some place to stay on that night, and that was at about 10.00PM.

We know time is ticking, suddenly I saw a guest came out from the small doors, immediately more than 10 reporters were go near to him to ask questions.

I know that is a great timing, we walk straight into the hotel lobby.

I saw policemen all around; one guy came over to ask if I am guest of this hotel, and explain to me what was happened today.

The policemen were so helpful, and they speak in nice tone. I recorded my room number, contact information and I went up to pack my stuffs.

I made a call to one of my friend in Hong Kong, and he was so surprise. He is then helped me to look for any budget hotel room available nearby.

One of the policemen volunteers to lend me his personal mobile phone to make phone call when I requested to use phone at the front desk. He was then spoke to my friend and helped to take down the address of a hotel (Y.W.C.A.) nearby.

We took taxi to Y.W.C.A., check in and sigh!! We have a shelter now…

We were told to contact the following council for complaints.

Lyrics

Hold on brother hold on
The road is long, we're on stony ground
But I'm strong, and you ain't heavy
Oh there's a misspoken truth that lies
Colors don't bind, oh no
What do they know? They speak falsely

Here in my home
I'll tell you what it's all about
There's just one hope here in my heart
One love undivided
That's what it's all about
Please won't you fall in one by one by one with me?
(Fall in~ Fall in~)
Fall in with me
(hmm ... fall in~)
Fall in fall in fall in with me

Push back sister won't you push back?
Love won't wait, just keep pushing on
Yes I'm strong, you ain't heavy
Oh don't you worry about that ...
What we have shadows can't deny
Don't you know it's now or never?

Here in my home
I'll tell you what it's all about
There's just one hope here in my heart
One love undivided
That's what it's all about
Please won't you fall in one by one?

Increase Petrol Price mean More $aving per Year for NGV users!

The petrol price increase from Rm1.92/litre to RM2.70/litre today (6 June 2008) which increase about 40% .

By referring to Petrol price for the past 18 years since 1990

before 1990 - RM 0.89
Year 1990 - RM 1.10 (increase RM 0.21)
01/10/2000- RM 1.20 (increase RM 0.10)
20/10/2001- RM 1.30 (increase RM 0.10)
01/05/2002- RM 1.32 (increase RM 0.02)
31/10/2002- RM 1.33 (increase RM 0.01)
01/03/2003- RM 1.35 (increase RM 0.02)
01/05/2004- RM 1.37 (increase RM 0.02)
01/10/2004- RM 1.42 (increase RM 0.05)
05/05/2005- RM 1.52 (increase RM 0.10)
31/07/2005- RM 1.62 (increase RM 0.10)
28/02/2006- RM 1.92 (increase RM 0.30)
04/06/2008- RM 2.70 (increase RM 0.78)

This is the worst increase in history.

With the increase of petrol price by 40%, see the below comparisons tawards NGV:

Price per Kilometer comparision
Petrol RM0.22 / km (at RM1.92/litre)
Petrol RM0.31 / km (at RM2.70/litre)
NGV RM0.06 / km (at RM0.68/litre)

Saving of RM0.16 /km (at RM1.92/litre)
Saving of RM0.25 /km (at RM2.70/litre)

that is about 73% saving (at RM1.92/litre)
that is about 80% saving (at RM2.70/litre)

Take an average of drive of 60km daily for 30 days per month.

Total distance 60 x 30 = 1800km
Total fuel price consume per month:Petrol RM0.22 x 1800 = RM396 (at RM1.92/litre)
Total fuel price consume per month:Petrol RM0.31 x 1800 = RM558 (at RM2.70/litre)
Natural Gas(CNG) RM0.06 x 2100 = RM108 (at RM0.68/litre)

Saving per month is RM288 (at RM1.92/litre)
Saving per month is RM450 (at RM2.70/litre)

Yearly Saving RM288 x 12 = Rm3456
Yearly Saving RM450 x 12 = Rm5400

Investment Point of View
If you were to get RM457 per month from bank for Fixed Deposit at 3.7% per year, you have to deposit RM148,243 in bank.

Price around RM2900 to RM3200 for Carburetor Car
Price around Rm5500 to RM6500 for Fuel Injection Car

Installment available for credit card user.
Use the saving for installment. Probably you got extra $ after paying the installment .

Worries?

1)Stop worry about queue ?

You can always find the right time to pump NGV. Furthermore, more and more has been built lately which mean less queue. The best about converting to NGV, you still have the option to use petrol, just in case run out of gas.

2) Worry no power?

Visit our forum. http://www.ngvcommunity.com on ways to increase power.

Is time to convert to NGV today!

Don’t subsidise fuel, don’t tax cars

I AGREE with Dzof Azmi’s argument in Fueling trouble with petrol subsidies, (Contradictheory, StarMag, March 30) that the Government cannot afford to subsidies petrol and keep prices artificially low forever.

However, I want to point out that when you talk about the price of petrol, you have to also talk about the price of cars in Malaysia. These two items go hand in hand, something that Dzof failed to mention.

If one expects the rakyat to pay the real price of petrol (say, RM3 per litre) in the future when the petrol subsidy is zero, then the price of cars must also be real, ie. be tax free.

If one expects the people to pay the full, real-world price of petrol – and I must say it is a perfectly reasonable expectation – then the rakyat expects, also reasonably, to buy cars at real-world prices, without the exorbitant taxes currently imposed.

For example, a Toyota Corolla at the real price of US$19,000 (RM60,500) instead of artificially high at RM117,000.

Now, when the average consumer buys a car, he has already paid (in the form of import duties, excise duties, and sale tax) to the Government, in advance, a sum greater than the petrol subsidy he can expect to enjoy over the time he owns the car.

Let me give you an example. If a consumer buys a Toyota Corolla at RM117,000, the tax he pays, up front, to the Government is more than RM50,000.

Then, he enjoys the fuel subsidy each time he fills up with petrol. To benefit from the RM50,000 that he has paid, in advance, it will take approximately 16 years (assuming he uses 60 litres of petrol a week and the subsidy is RM1 per litre)!

So, it is not fair to say that the subsidy of petrol has to be reduced or removed when the commodity price goes up, without reducing or abolishing the hefty taxes on cars.

You can’t use the “cheapest petrol in South-East Asia” and “price of crude oil has skyrocketed” excuses to justify the reduction in petrol subsidy as long as the ridiculously high tax is imposed on cars.

The rakyat won’t buy your story because we know that we, as motorists, have already paid for the petrol “subsidy”, in advance!

Two men in a hospital room

A story starts here...

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.

His bed was next to the room's only window.

The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.

Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.

He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.

It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, "Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you..."

Epilogue:

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.

Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.

If you want to feel rich, just count all the things you have that money can't buy.

"Today is a gift, that is why it is called The Present."

The origin of this letter is unknown, but it brings good luck to everyone who passes it on.

Can A Family Man With Salary RM3,000 Survive In Malaysia...?

Can A Family Man With Salary RM3,000 Survive In Malaysia?

Can a family man with Salary
RM3,000 survive in Malaysia

Let's do some simple calculations here.

In Malaysia, the average family income is
RM3,000 /month
(where father works, mother doesn't).

I understand there are many families whose monthly income does not reach
RM3,000, but, to make things simple, let's take RM3,000 as the figure. Ok lah, right?

Okay, let's start rolling with a family which has Papa, Mama, 1 daughter and 1 son. Ngam-ngam .....

Calculation starts...

Electricity and water bill:
RM100
(No air-con, No home theatre, No water heater ... ok?)

Phone bill (Telekom+handphone):
RM100

Meals for a happy family: RM775
(3 meals on RM25/day, RM25 for 4 persons...?)

Papa makan / teh-tarik during working hrs:
RM155
(RM5/day, RM5 ... can eat what?)

Car repayment:
RM400
(A proton saga aeroback, 7 yrs repayment)

Petrol (living in city, traffic-jam):
RM300
(go to work, bring son to school, only can afford one car running)

Insurance:
RM650
(kids, wife and myself)

House repayment:
RM750
(low cost housing repayment for 30 yrs, retired still have to work to pay!)

Tuition:
RM80
(got that cheap meh? i don't think so)

Older children pocket money @ school:
RM20
(RM1/day, eat bread?)

School fees:
RM30
(enough ah?)

School books and etc:
RM100 (always got extra to pay in school)

Younger children milk powder:
RM50
(cannot have the DHA, BHA, PHA one, expensive)

Miscellaneous:
RM100
(shampoo, rice, sauce, toilet paper)

Oh wait!!! I have to stop here, so...

No Astro,
no movie @ cinema,
no DVD,
no CD,
no online,
cannot KFC,
cannot McDonald,
cannot go Park walk during weekend (petrol expensive),
no chit chat on phone with grandparents, and etc...

Let's use a calculator to total up... WALAO EH! Shit!
RM3,610 already...

EPF belum potong, income tax lagi........oledi RM3,610 ....

How to survive lah tuan-tuan dan puan-puan sekalian ???

Our Deputy Prime Minister asked us to change lifestyle?

How to change? Don't eat? Don't work? Don't send children to school and study?

Besides that, I believe in Malaysia population, there are millions of rakyat Malaysia which still don't earn RM3,000/month!!!

What is this? Inilah Malaysia Boleh...
Sorry ... it should be Malaysians Boleh , because we're still alive and kicking!!

Our politicians must be mad!!!!

Please forward and comment boleh or tak boleh. No wonder so many Ah Loong around lah....

Controlling your brain

This is amazing...

If you see this lady turning in clockwise you are using your right brain.
If you see it the other way, you are using left brain.
Some people do see both ways, but most people see it only one way.

If you try to see it the other way and if you do see, your IQ is above 160 which is almost a genius.

Then see if you can make her go one way and then the other by shifting the brain's current.

BOTH DIRECTIONS CAN BE SEEN

This was proved at Yale University, over a 5 year study on the human brain and it's functions. Only 14% of the US population can see her move both ways.
